Thermostatic radiator valve stuck shut – fix?
I have just taken my non-working radiator off and opened the inlet Thermostatic Valve on the supply line but when I look inside, as I open and shut the valve, the stem is not moving. Is there a fix for this or do I need to replace it – I don’t fancy draining the system down but I suppose I could use a freeze spray if I must. Thanks for any advice
If it’s a thermostatic valve it will only open if it’s cold therefore don’t fire up your heating. You can spray with a WD40 type spray to get things going but a gentle(ish) knock or two may help. If you pop off the top you can see the stem and check that it’s not snapped off the knob on the top of the valve. If this has happened, turn it with pliers to where you want it.
If it’s a thermostatic vale it won’t open unless you put the heating on, than it’ll open to the temperature you set it to, if the valve is stuck, undo the round nut (silver coloured), you’ll find a round pin sticking out, spray some WD40 on it, reassemble the valve, should you keep the radiator off, make sure the valve is turned to frost-stat.
